Staged at one of the fastest and most picturesque circuits on the MotoGP™ calendar, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, the Australian MotoGP™ has provided some unforgettable races! Just last year, Aussie young gun, Jack Miller, kept his Moto3 Championship hopes alive by passing eventual champion, Alex Marquez, on the final corner of the race to win the race by just 0.029 seconds!
In the same year in the ‘main game’, the winner (Valentino Rossi who claimed an incredible 8th victory at The Island) was largely determined by who was able to keep their bike upright by the end of the race – an incredible 9 bikes were unable to finish the race due to a retirement and/or accident! Then in 2013, who could forget the drama surrounding tyre-supplier, Bridgestone’s inability to supply rubber that could last the full duration of the scheduled race on the newly-resurfaced track! This forced race organisers to shorten the duration of the race and it was also made mandatory for riders to pit after a certain amount of laps and switch to a bike with fresh tyres. Apparently this was a memo that then-champion Marc Marquez missed! Leading the race at the time, he stayed out a lap longer than he was meant to and was automatically disqualified!
